The Hinwood Institute Story

In October 2020, Dr. John Hinwood died of Mesothelioma.

John’s passing rocked his worldwide community of colleagues, students, friends and followers. As word spread that John was living his last days, both he and his wife, Dr Judy Hinwood, were flooded with messages from around the world. People who had been deeply impacted by his incredible scope of work wanted to express their appreciation for all he had done for them.

John had educated, mentored and befriended tens of thousands of people in his lifetime.

Michael Massey and Dr. John were long term friends and colleagues. Sharing a love for wellbeing and rugby, they had collaborated on projects and reciprocated in coaching and mentorship of each other.

In later years, Michael would qualify as a Stress Management Practitioner through the Stress Management Institute, founded by Dr John & Judy Hinwood.

He also partnered with the Stress Management Institute on major business initiatives.

Barbara Clifford first met John when he was handing out ‘Expect a Miracle’ cards at a business event, promoting his new venture, a stress management weekend workshop called “Stress to Strength”.

Barbara shared with John that she believed her recent challenge with basal cell carcinoma was also connected to stress. He cradled her hands gently, stared in her eyes and said “Yes, and it’s all connected to stress.”

Barbara was offered an internship, to work alongside John & Judy, while also studying for the Stress Management Practitioner.

Once graduating from this and adopting the techniques into her already successful business, Barbara continued to consult to the Stress Management Institute until John’s passing.

With John’s passing, Judy was faced with the monumental task of continuing to lead the Stress Management Institute on her own.

During her grieving, the Institute reduced services to a minimal offering, and Michael and Barbara contributed their efforts to the running and operating of the Institute through this difficult time.

Both were concerned that this wonderful body of work, and the incredible impact it makes on people around the world, might cease to be available.

In a business meeting, discussing the future of the Stress Management Institute, neither Barbara nor Michael was comfortable to make a full time move to the Institute given their existing commitments. Then in an inspired moment they asked each other, ‘what if we did it together?’

With Dr. Judy’s gracious and enthusiastic blessing, Michael and Barbara formed an entity to acquire the decades of work and intellectual property developed by both John and Judy.

This encompassed:

  • Miracle mindset
  • Coaching techniques
  • Business Building; and more!

Barbara and Michael decided to amalgamate this with their own body of work and knowledge including:

  • Time management
  • Leadership
  • Wellbeing (and retreats)
  • Executive Peak Performance

The company was no longer just about stress management it was so much more!

It was personally important to both Michael and Barbara to honour the legacy of Dr John & Judy Hinwood’s work. They aligned on the name ‘The Hinwood Institute’ with Dr Judy’s blessing.

NURSE SURPERVISOR

I was knocked falt but you enabled me to stand up, work things out and take back control. You gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone, to dare to dream, to do something different, to take the risk and do what I wanted to do, not just what I felt I had to do. You have made a huge wonderful difference to my life and because of you I am more confident.
